Holly Pickett has been added to the Republic of Ireland backroom team following the surprise resignation of performance coach Ivi Casagrande.

Pickett most recently worked with San Diego Waves and was previously with manager Carla Ward at both Aston Villa and Birmingham City.

Casagrande has said she wants to focus on work at grassroots level and coach education as the reason behind the exit.

Casagrande said: "I am so proud of what we have achieved over the past 18 months and incredibly grateful for the players, staff and colleagues who have made the journey so meaningful.

"This isn't a goodbye to Irish football or to coaching - just a shift in how and where I show up."

The news of her departure has come as a disappointment to the Irish players.

Captain Katie McCabe described her as a "top class coach", while Megan Campbell added "thank you for everything you’ve done for us as a team and first as people".

Amber Barrett said Casagrande is "without doubt one of the best in the profession" and said she will be sorely missed.

Pickett left San Diego last November and spent five years between Villa and Birmingham.

It is expected she will be in position for the Nations League double-header with Greece.

The squad for those games was announced earlier today with word of Casagrande's exit only coming through after she posted on social media hours later.
