England debutant Myles Lewis-Skelly got new coach Thomas Tuchel's reign up and running as the 18-year-old scored the first goal in a 2-0 home victory against Albania in their World Cup qualifying Group K opener on Friday.
The Arsenal left-back, who along with Newcastle United's Dan Burn was handed a first cap in Tuchel's maiden game in charge, slotted home in the 20th minute at a packed Wembley.
It took England until the 77th minute to make the points safe, though, with captain Harry Kane's precise finish ensuring that Tuchel's opening night ended with three points.
Burn came close to making it a dream night for the debutants in the first half when he headed against the crossbar.
Tuchel's England team are back in action at Wembley on Monday when they host Latvia in their second qualifier while Albania host group outsiders Andorra.
Latvia dispatched Andorra 1-0 with Dario Sits finding the back of the net in the 59th minute.
In Group G, Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski was on target for Poland in a 1-0 victory over Lithuania in Warsaw.
Lewandowski took a pass on the edge of the area before chipping the ball into the top right corner.
Oliver Antman pounced in the first half in Ta' Qali as Finland edged out Malta, who had Kurt Shaw sent off with 12 minutes to go.
Bosnia-Herzegovina's win over Romania in Bucharest was one of three 1-0 victories on the road in Friday night's qualifying action. Armin Gigovic's 15th-minute strike was enough to see off the hosts at National Arena in Group H.
Second-half strikes by Ioannis Pittas and Andronikos Kakoullis fired Cyprus to a 2-0 victory over San Marino in Larnaca.
