Liverpool assistant manager Amber Whiteley has been added to Ireland head coach Carla Ward's backroom team ahead of the upcoming UEFA Nations League campaign.

Whiteley joins former Ireland internationals, Alan Mahon and Emma Byrne, as part of the coaching set-up for the women's national team, while Ivi Casagrande will be the squad's performance coach.

New recruit Whiteley has previously worked with Manchester United, Sunderland and the England women's Under-18 team.

Whiteley will maintain her position at the Anfield club where she works alongside manager Matt Beard and fellow coach Scott Rogers.

"I'm really looking forward to joining the Ireland women’s national team and to be part of Carla’s backroom staff," said Whiteley.

"It’s a brilliant opportunity to work with an exciting group of players as they head into the UEFA Nations League. I am grateful to Liverpool for allowing me the opportunity to work with Ireland and to further my own development."

The Girls in Green were drawn into Group 2 in League B with Greece, Slovenia and Turkey, and they will kick off their campaign in Tallaght Stadium on Friday, 21 February against the Turks before travelling to Koper to take on Slovenia on Tuesday, 25 February.

"I’m delighted to bring this group of talented professionals and brilliant people together to work with our players for what will be an exciting UEFA Nations League campaign that then leads us into the qualifiers for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup," said Ward.

"We will only succeed if we work together as a team, on and off the pitch, and everyone is already playing their part in preparing us for the opening games against Turkey and Slovenia. We are ready to get going."

Mahon played in the Premier League for Blackburn, and links up with the squad following a decade coaching with the Manchester City Women’s Team.

Women's record caps holder Byrne continues in the set-up as goalkeeping coach, while Casagrande brings vast experience having worked at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup with Brazil.
