Republic of Ireland international Adam Idah is excited about the prospect of being the number-one striker at Celtic going into the second half of the season as Johnny Kenny returns from his Shamrock Rovers loan spell.

Idah had played second fiddle to Kyogo Furuhashi after signing last summer from Norwich for a reported fee of £9.5million following a successful loan spell at Parkhead.

Celtic failed to replace Furuhashi after the Japan international moved to French club Rennes in the January transfer window, leaving the 23-year-old as the main striker.

Idah has support from Japan international Daizen Maeda and 21-year-old Johnny Kenny, who made his debut last month after coming back from a loan spell at Shamrock Rovers.

Any hopes of Kenny, who spent 2023 and 2024 at Tallaght Stadium, remaining at Rovers were ended when Brendan Rodgers confirmed the Sligo man was back in his first-team plans.

After nine goals in 19 loan appearances last season, Idah has found the goals harder to come from since making a permanent switch in the summer with eight goals in 32 appearances prior to his Champions League brace against Aston Villa followed by a goal against Motherwell last weekend.

"Of course, it's nice for me, obviously, that potentially I’ve got a lot more game time on my hands, but at the end of the day, it’s not my decision whether the club signs a striker or not," the former Norwich City frontman said.

"I want to be the main man, and I want to have that role and responsibility to try and help the team.

"So it’s exciting times for me, and hopefully I can carry on the goal scoring that I’ve been doing.

"It’s why I came to Celtic in the first place. Even last year when I came (on loan) I wanted more minutes, and I’ve come back again in the summer and now I’ve got a big responsibility to take, and I’m ready to take it.

"You want to play as many minutes as you can and I’m ready to take that role now.

"But it’s all about the team. I don’t think I’d be too bothered if another striker came in, because at the end of the day, we all want the same thing, and that’s to win as many trophies and titles as we can.

"So whoever comes in, we know they’re going to help. We’re not really too focused on who comes in or who’s going out. It’s just whoever’s in the building right now and then we focus on the job."
