Manchester City will square up to Real Madrid in a blockbuster Champions League play-off showdown, while Celtic have been pitted against German giants Bayern Munich.
The draw to finalise the play-off round took place today at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, and threw up some intriguing pairings.
Last season Real knocked Pep Guardiola's City out in the quarter-finals on penalties after a classic two-legged affair that had ended 4-4 on aggregate.
Both sides have failed to hit their stride in the new-look competition thus far but their collision is the standout tie of the play-off round.
It's the fifth two-legged tie between City and Madrid in the last six seasons. Last year Carlo Ancelotti's men ended City's hopes of retaining the Champions League as they won in a penalty shoot-out at the Etihad in the quarter-finals.
The year before, City prevailed in the semi-finals on their way to completing a treble, conquering Europe for the first time in the club's history.
Meanwhile, Celtic can look forward to a massive night in Glasgow when they welcome Bayern - managed by former City skipper Vincent Kompany - to Celtic Park.
The Bhoys will target a big result in that first leg to have any hope of causing an upset, especially as their fans face being banned from the return leg after the club were hit with a UEFA disciplinary notice.
The Scottish champions were on a suspended ban for away fans following a series of fines over the use of pyrotechnics, and an incident with a smoke cannister at Villa Park on Wednesday has sparked a potential triggering of the punishment.
Juventus were drawn against PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord were paired with AC Milan, while Club Brugge will face Atalanta.
There is an all-French tie between Brest and Paris Saint-Germain, AS Monaco will take on Benfica, and Sporting have been drawn against Borussia Dortmund.
First legs of the play-off round will take place on 11/12 February, with the second legs on 18/19 February.
The winners of the eight ties will advance to the last 16, where they will face one of the eight top seeds from the league stage.
In the Europa League play-offs, Roma will face Porto as they bid to join Manchester United, Tottenham and Rangers in the last 16.
United and Spurs finished third and fourth in the league standings respectively and will face one of either Real Sociedad, Galatasaray, AZ Alkmaar or Midtjylland in the last 16.
The play-off draw paired Galatasaray with AZ Alkmaar and Real Sociedad against Midtjylland.
Rangers, who came eighth in the league standings, will play one of Bodo/Glimt, Anderlecht, Twente or Fenerbahce.
Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce were drawn to face Anderlecht, while Twente will take on Bodo/Glimt.
Ferencvaros play Viktoria Plzen and PAOK will meet FCSB of Romania.
The two-legged ties will take place on February 13 and 20.
The draws for the last 16 of both competitions will be made on Friday, 21 February.
