Marcus Rashford should be ashamed of United exile - Roy Keane

Former Manchester United skipper Roy Keane has told England striker Marcus Rashford he should be "ashamed" at his exile.

The 27-year-old has not played for the club since a 2-1 Europa League victory at Viktoria Plzen on 12 December, and head coach Ruben Amorim has told him he "has to change" if he is to have a future at Old Trafford.

Rashford has not been included in the squad for Thursday night's trip to FCSB despite training with the group during the build-up after a period working by himself, described by another of United's former big guns, Wayne Rooney, as "embarrassing".

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Keane said: "I can't get involved in the conversation, I still can't understand at any level. Whatever's going on with players leaving, months left on contracts, a player who doesn't train properly...I don't understand it.

"You might as well leave me out of this conversation. Especially if you think he wants to move, which is more of a reason to train properly so when you go to a new club you're up to speed and when you leave the club at least you showed a decent attitude. He must be ashamed."

Rooney revealed he had seen Rashford working alone with a fitness coach in front of parents when he took his children to the club's Carrington training headquarters.

He said: "I went into Carrington on Sunday to take my kids to game day and Marcus Rashford was out on the training pitch with the fitness coach, but he was right over towards where the parents were walking past for the kids' games.

"I looked at him thinking how embarrassing it must be for him as parents walk past."

Indeed, Rooney admitted he had spoken to Rashford and told him he needed to leave the club if he was to resurrect his career.

He said: "I've spoken to Marcus a couple of times and I've given him my thoughts and feelings that he needs to leave the football club because whatever is going on his life and at Manchester United, he's not the same. For him to have a fresh start, he needs to leave the club."

Amorim has appeared to leave the door ajar for a Rashford return, after he admitted that United need a player like Rashford but says the forward "has to change" and meet his standards to have a future at Old Trafford.

The forward trained with his team-mates on the eve of the match but was omitted from the 21-man squad seeking to avoid a play-off tie and secure a last-16 spot in Romania.

"Again, guys, the situation is the same for every player," Amorim said as Wednesday night's pre-match press conference started with a question about Rashford.

"The last time I talked about that in the last game (against Fulham on Sunday), my sentence was that I will not put (in) any player that don't give the maximum.

"I didn't say I will not put Marcus Rashford (in), so it's the same situation.

"When I feel that it is the right moment, I will put any player to play and, I will say it again, we are a better team with Marcus Rashford. And that is clear - he is a big talent.

"But until the right moment, I will not change my mind. That's all, and it's always the same answer."
