Waterford FC have added significant firepower to their squad with the loan signing of Tommy Lonergan from Fleetwood Town FC for the 2025 League of Ireland season.

Lonergan makes the move to the RSC having spent the last year at Highbury Stadium, where he made 20 appearances in League 1 and 2 since transferring from St Patrick's Athletic.

He is best known for scoring in the 2023 FAI Cup final as he helped the Saints to a 3-1 victory over Bohemians.

The Meath native made his first-team debut for Pat's in 2021.

Lonergan departed for UCD AFC in 2022, where he made a long-lasting effect for the Students, as he netted the deciding goal in the promotion/relegation final against the Blues in Richmond Park.

He made the return to Inchicore for the start of the 2023 campaign, where he made 36 appearances across all competitions – 31 of which came in the Premier Division.

Despite links with the Blues, it was Fleetwood who secured Lonergan’s services for 2024, a season that saw him net his first goal for the Cods in their final game of the season against Burton Albion at Highbury Stadium.

Waterford and Fleetwood are under the same ownership and share regular loan agreements.

Lonergan has been capped from U16 to U21 level by the Republic of Ireland.

The 21-year-old said: "I’m delighted to be here, I can’t wait to get going. When I got the call, it made sense for me to come here on a season-long loan.

"I loved my time in the League of Ireland at Pat’s and UCD. I want to bring my work ethic, I want to bring goals and energy to the team and help in any way I can.

"I’ve heard great things about Keith Long. He has a great record in the league and has a track record of bringing through great young players. I’m delighted to work under him."
