Delay in paying Dundalk players by new owner after whirlwind week

Dundalk's players will not be paid this week with new owner John Temple claiming to need time to make the necessary arrangements, resulting in a delay.

The Lilywhites were taken over by a consortium headed by Temple on Tuesday, avoiding bankruptcy and the prospect of the club folding by a matter of hours.

The players previously suffered a delay in being paid before their defeat to St Patrick’s Athletic on 5 September.

That was remedied when the FAI assisted now former owner Brian Ainscough with the advance of prize money.

This week’s pay will not arrive in time but the new owner has committed to all salaries up until 30 November.

The club’s first-team squad had offered to defer wages when Dundalk were seeking investment.

RTÉ Sport understands Temple has given assurances it is simply a delay and the wages will be paid.

Temple has confirmed the club remain in a crisis situation, despite the intervention.

He said he does not want to enter SCARP - a form of administration which would see the club automatically relegated and pay their creditors a small percentage of what is owed.

Temple told the Dundalk FC YouTube channel: "We are in serious financial difficulty. Creditors are constantly at the door, and there are threats of legal action.

"I have met with the players this morning to explain to them if I was to just dump it into SCARP straight away they have nothing left to fight for for the rest of the season," Temple said.

"They have a number of big games coming up. Sligo at the weekend. Next week, we have our first home game of my reign, which they didn't think was going to happen, against Bohemians.

"We explained the situation. It's bleak. I won't lie. We are far from out of the woods.

"I didn't put us in this situation, the fans didn't put us in this situation, and the players certainly didn't put us in this situation.

"This has been festering and has emanated from before but the reality is that we are where we are and how are we going to get out?

"It needs patience from everybody but it is also going to need support from everybody immediately and that is the important thing."
