League of Ireland preview: Hoops in last-chance saloon for title race

Waterford beat Shamrock Rovers in a rare home defeat for the champions over the last five years
Waterford beat Shamrock Rovers in a rare home defeat for the champions over the last five years

Shamrock Rovers are in the last-chance saloon in the bid to save their five in a row title hopes as they take on European hopefuls Waterford.

There are just three matches tonight with two games impacting the bottom of the table as well.

But the focus will certainly be on the RSC to see if Stephen Bradley's side can put together the run they need.

The Blues were dealt a blow last week with defeat to bottom side Drogheda United as the race to qualify for the Conference League heats up.

Four teams are now separated by three points, including tonight’s participants Waterford.

The champions will watch on as leaders Shelbourne take on Derry City on Monday and can make ground on at least one side if they win tonight.

Keith Long’s side have made a remarkable transition to life back in the Premier, with a 3-1 success over the Hoops at Tallaght Stadium one of the highlights.

Goalkeeper Sam Sargeant remains absent after picking up a fractured hand in training last week.

Bradley was very unhappy with his side when they went from the high of Champions League progression to losing in the FAI Cup to Bohemians.

Stephen Bradley wants his side to bring their best to the RSC

He is keen to avoid a repeat on the back of another spirited display.

"What we need to really focus on is that we can’t have a performance like when we played Bohemians after a European tie," he said.

"We came off the back of the Vikingur game and we looked a million miles away against Bohs.

"If we go to Waterford like that, there’s no doubt we’ll get beaten. We need to ensure that our mentality, attitude and focus is right. If it is, we’ll be fine, but we need to make sure we’re fully focussed on what is in front of us."

"It’s a big game. With league games now, we’ve put ourselves in a position where we need to take maximum points most weeks. That starts tonight in Waterford. But our main goal is to make sure we’re 100% focussed.

"We know we’ve had a good and a tough game on Tuesday in Europe, but that should give us energy, give us focus more than anything else. We need to make sure there’s no repeat of what happened a couple of weeks ago and make sure we’re ready to go."

Elsewhere, Drogheda will attempt to do what Dundalk failed to last week and drag Bohemians close to the drop zone.

United claimed their first three points since May last Friday and moved to within that amount of their Louth rivals.

Tonight they return to Weavers Park, looking to bring Bohs into real jeopardy.

The Gypsies had plenty of possession last week but lacked a cutting edge up front.

Ross Tierney did hit the net as he continued his excellent form since returning to Dublin.

It has always felt as if Bohs would eventually rise up the table, especially after their FAI Cup victory over Shamrock Rovers.

This is a crunch game to see if they can do so.

Bohs boss Alan Reynolds said: "We played well for 70-odd minutes against Dundalk and were on the front foot for large spells

"Again, on another day, we were the bounce of a ball away from being 2-0 up on several occasions, and we had a penalty shout too.

"There was a lot to be pleased about. Our performances are improving, and we need to keep believing in what we are trying to achieve, but we need to turn those positives into victories.

"There is frustration with our league form, but I think our supporters recognise what we are trying to do with the team and the players we have added over the past month to help push us on.

"We have shown glimpses of what we are capable of in the past couple of weeks and they have responded to that and have got behind the team. We all want to build on that together now."

Ross Tierney and Dawson Devoy have been huge influential for Bohs in recent weeks

Dawson Devoy returns from suspension, while Jordan Flores is a doubt and Archie Meekison misses out.

Jake Carroll, James McManus, Rob Cornwall and Keith Buckley remain out as well for Bohs.

Dundalk host Galway United in another encounter hard to predict given the form of both sides.

Jon Daly took charge of Dundalk for the first time when they met the Tribesmen.

They have collected three winsin eight since losing 2-0 to Galway back in late May.

United dropped into the bottom half last weekend after a long period high up the table as their struggles on the road continue.

United have struggled on the road with the home form keeping them going.

Andy Boyle resumed training this week for the Lilywhites after recovering from the groin strain that has kept him out for the last five games but there are doubts over Norman Garbett while Dara Keane and Paul Doyle are injured.

Daly is wary of Galway's threat, saying: "I was at Galway's game on Saturday against Sligo and they’re very difficult to play against. They make you defend and they ask questions of you and if you’re not switched on defensively then they can hurt you and punish you.

"They might have lost their last four away matches but that makes them a dangerous animal. They’re not a team that mixes up what they do. They’re probably one of the hardest-working teams in the league and they’re not embarrassed to put the ball behind you and make you defend.

"They ask questions of you defensively and look for cracks and if there are any then they’ll find them because they don’t let up so it’s important that defensively we’re switched on.

"I feel we have been for large parts of the games but it’s important that we bring that again and then have a little bit more quality on the ball and a bit more belief in possession because I think we can punish them with some of the attacking players that we have in the team.

"We’ve very good players and if we can get them into areas where we can ask questions of them then I think we can hurt them."
