Derry City have announced the signing of English midfielder Jacob Davenport on a permanent deal.

The 25-year-old spent the 2023/24 season with League Two side Morecambe and has experience of playing in the Championship with Burton Albion and Blackburn Rovers.

Davenport came through the Manchester City academy and mainly operates as a defensive midfielder, while also being adept in the centre of defence and at left full-back.

"Derry City FC can confirm that midfielder Jacob Davenport has joined the club on a permanent deal ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window," said the Candystripes in a post on X.

"The highly-rated 25-year-old is a product of the Manchester City Academy where he played alongside Will Patching and Sadou Diallo.

"Ruaidhri Higgins moved quickly to secure the player's signature once he had agreed to move from Morecambe with Jacob arriving in the City late on Friday night.

"He has made over 50 appearances in the English Championship with Blackburn Rovers and Burton Albion, and 35 more in the EFL and FA cup, showing the type of quality our supporters can look forward to seeing.

"Jacob will be formally introduced at a press conference on Monday and will be available for selection after 1 July."

Davenport joins Derry ahead of a busy period for the club, as they balance a title challenge with an assault on the Europa Conference League qualifiers.

They have been drawn to play FCB Magpies of Gibraltar in the opening round, with the prize on offer being a two-legged clash with Danish giants FC Copenhagen.

As Davenport comes in, long-serving defender Cameron McJannet is heading in the other direction, as it was announced earlier this week that he is joining Grimsby Town in England's League Two.

In the SSE Airtricity Men's First Division, Treaty United have confirmed that midfielder William Armshaw has left the club for personal reasons.

"The 24-year-old was a member of the first ever senior men's squad and leaves as the club’s second-highest all-time appearance holder with 102 showings in a Treaty United shirt, recording 12 goals and seven assists," said a post on the Limerick club's website.

"Treaty United would like to thank Willie for his contributions to the club over the last three-and-a-half seasons and wish him well going forward."
