UCD's Harry Curtis has received a ten-match ban for using "discriminatory language" in a recent SSE Airtricity League First Division clash with Kerry.
The FAI and League of Ireland insist on a zero tolerance approach to discrimination, and as a result Curtis will now miss a large chunk of the current campaign.
The University team have since released a statement confirming that both they and the player accept the decision and would not be appealing the ban, adding that they are "working internally" with Curtis to educate him on the issue.
UCD won last Friday night's encounter in Kerry 2-1 as the Students came from behind to take the three points, while Curtis received a straight red card in the fourth minute of injury-time.
A statement released by the league read: "An Independent Disciplinary Committee of the FAI has sanctioned UCD AFC player Harry Curtis for using discriminatory language towards a Kerry FC player in the SSE Airtricity Men's First Division fixture on 10 May 2024."
Dundalk goalkeeper George Shelvey received a similar ban following a red card after their defeat to Drogheda United earlier this month.
"The FAI and League of Ireland maintains a strict zero tolerance approach towards any act of discrimination and are committed to ensuring that League of Ireland matches remain a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.
"In accordance with FIFA Regulations and the FAI Disciplinary Regulations, Harry Curtis will serve a ten-match suspension.
"Please note the decision of the Independent Disciplinary Committee may be appealed."
The UCD statement read: "UCD FC does not condone the use of discriminatory language in any form and welcomes and supports the FAI and League of Ireland's commitment to maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for all.
"Both the player and the club accept the decision of the Independent Committee and will not be appealing this decision and will be working internally with Harry to better his education and understanding of these issues."
Kerry welcomed the decision in a statement released today: "Kerry Football Club welcomes today's statement from the League of Ireland.
"We condemn discrimination in football and are constantly working to kick it out of the game.
"Mounthawk Park and Kerry FC is a community where everyone is welcome regardless of race, ethnicity, and other diverse backgrounds.
"We would like to thank the Independent Disciplinary Committee in the FAI for their continued efforts and dedication to keeping discrimination out of the game."
