Shamrock Rovers missed the chance to return to second in the SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division after a 1-1 draw with Wexford Youths.

With Shelbourne, who had beaten the Hoops in last weekend's Sports Direct FAI Women's Cup semi-finals, going up to second after a midweek victory over Sligo Rovers, the pressure was on Rovers to beat Wexford and try to finish the season as runners-up behind newly-crowned champions Peamount United.

But they fell behind on 32 minutes away at Wexford who broke the deadlock through Kylie Murphy.

Shamrock Rovers salvaged a point after a Lauren Dwyer own goal but the result means Collie O'Neill's side stay two points adrift of Shelbourne with both Dublin rivals having an identical goal difference.

Wexford, meanwhile, stay sixth just behind but level on points with cup finalists Athlone Town who were 3-1 winners at bottom side Cork City.

Goals in each half from Dana Scheriff as well as another from Chloe Singleton strike had the midlanders in control before Fiana Bradley netted a Cork consolation.

Galway United are above Athlone in the table however as they continued their impressive campaign with a 3-0 win at second from bottom Treaty United, whose player, ex-Republic of Ireland international Ciara McCormack, recently competed a takeover of the club in partnership with Vancouver-based Tricorps Pacific Capital.

Kate Thompson and Jodie Griffin had Galway two goals up at the break before Jamie Erickson put the icing on the cake late on.
