Everton have signed Republic of Ireland international Megan Campbell on a short-term loan.

The former Liverpool defender, who missed out on selection at the Women's World Cup after failing to make a full return to fitness before the tournament in Australia and New Zealand, has been on the lookout for a club since her contract with Liverpool expired in the summer.

The 30-year-old has now pitched up at Merseyside neighbours Everton.

Campbell, who has 47 caps for her country, made 27 appearances in the Women's Super League last season.

"It's a different challenge for me, coming into the WSL with a new team, and I am looking forward to it," Campbell told Everton's website.

"Hopefully I can thrive in the blue of Everton and I'm confident it can be a successful season for the team."

Everton head coach Brian Sorensen said: "We are delighted to welcome Megan to the club. She is a player who is rich in experience both domestically and internationally with Ireland.

"Heading into the new season, we wanted to add some experience to our group and Megan ticks every box in that department."

Everton open their 2023-24 WSL campaign at home against Brighton on Sunday.

Katie McCabe is staying with Arsenal

Republic of Ireland captain Katie McCabe has signed a new contract at Arsenal, the Women's Super League club have announced.

The versatile Dubliner, 28, has made 193 appearances for the Gunners, scoring 31 goals, since joining them in December 2015.

Her previous deal had been set to expire next summer and the length of the new contract has not been revealed. Arsenal are believed to have rejected a "substantial" transfer bid from WSL rivals Chelsea in January this year.

McCabe has helped Arsenal win the 2019 WSL title, one FA Cup and two League Cups. She was the only player not from finalists Barcelona or Wolfsburg named on the UEFA Women's Champions League Team of the Year (at left-back) last season, though last season's semi-finalists made a shock exit in qualifying earlier this month.

During the summer she skippered the Ireland team at the World Cup in New Zealand and Australia, the country's first appearance at a major women's tournament finals, and scored their only goal of the campaign, direct from a corner against Canada (below).

McCabe, who is on the 2023 Ballon d'Or shortlist, said: "Arsenal is home for me and I’m excited to have committed my future to this football club.

"I’ve grown up here as a player and a person and developed a really special bond with our supporters, which means a lot to me.

"Over the years, I’ve experienced some amazing moments here – but I believe that the best is yet to come and I know the aim here at Arsenal is to compete for the highest honours."

Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall said: "Katie McCabe brings us so much on and off the pitch, so we are delighted to say that she has signed a new contract here with us.

"She has been one of the top performers in world football over the past few years and her quality and character are integral to what we do here.

"We were very proud to see how she stepped up as captain when called upon last season and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve together moving forward."
