Santiago Gimenez completed his hat-trick to guide Feyenoord to victory over Ajax in an Eredivisie clash that was finished on Wednesday having been halted at the weekend.

The first De Klassieker of the season was abandoned just 56 minutes into the contest on Sunday, as Ajax fans threw flares and fireworks on the pitch at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

The hosts already trailed 3-0 at that point as their poor start to the new campaign continued, with the fixture having already been held up on two occasions as angry home supporters threw projectiles onto the playing surface.

A Gimenez brace and a third from Igor Paixao had Feyenoord firmly in control when a third offence caused the match to be abandoned.

Police then used tear gas to disperse riots outside of the stadium as the fixture was hastily rearranged to be completed on Wednesday afternoon.

Feyenoord, who were not allowed fans into the game on Sunday, went on to secure a 4-0 win as Gimenez struck again in an empty stadium.

The result leaves Ajax languishing 14th in the Eredivisie, having won just one of their opening five fixtures.

The Johan Cruyff Arena is scheduled host a Euro 2024 qualifier between the Netherlands and the Republic of Ireland on 18 November.
