Huge blow for Ireland as Evan Ferguson ruled out of France and Netherlands matches

Evan Ferguson has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland's Euro 2024 qualifiers against France and Netherlands this week.

The Brighton and Hove Albion forward sustained a knee injury in the 3-1 win over Newcastle United on Saturday.

Ferguson reported for international duty on Sunday but after assessment from the Ireland medical team, he has been ruled out of both fixtures.

The rest of the squad will travel to Paris later today.

Ferguson picked up the injury in the second half of the 3-1 win at the Amex on Saturday evening, before he was substituted, having scored the first hat-trick of his professional career.

Adam Idah (Norwich City), Will Keane (Preston North End), Aaron Connolly (Hull City) and Chiedozie Ogbene (Luton Town) are the other forward options in Kenny's squad for Thursday's game against the beaten World Cup finalists.

Andrew Omobamidele was called up as defensive cover on Sunday due to a doubt over John Egan.

After Ferguson's hat-trick at the weekend, there was some discussion in UK media about the possibility the former St Kevin's Boys and Bohemians player could switch allegiance due to his mother's English heritage.

However, the six times capped Ferguson (who has never expressed any interest in playing for England) is not eligible to switch nationality under the latest FIFA rules, which stipulate that a player can only change allegiance if he "was fielded in no more than three matches at 'A' international level in any kind of football for his current association, whether in an official competition or non-official competition".

Updated in 2021, the governing body's rules governing eligibility to play for representative teams no longer distinguish between friendly and competitive matches - as was the case with Declan Rice, who declared for the country of his birth in 2019, despite playing in three friendly matches for the Republic of Ireland in the previous year.

On a more positive note, John Egan trained with the team and has travelled with the squad to Paris ahead of Thursday night's game.

Andrew Omobamidele was called into the squad after the Sheffield United central defender picked up an injury at the weekend, and while Egan has yet to be cleared to play on Thursday, it would certainly appear that the manager is hopeful that he may be involved in at least one of this week's two game.
