Transfer wrap: Reds reject Salah offer, City get Nunes

Liverpool insist Mo Salah is not for sale
Liverpool insist Mo Salah is not for sale

Liverpool have rejected a £150million offer for Mohamed Salah from Saudi Arabia Pro League side Al-Ittihad.

The Egypt international has been the subject of interest from the Middle East for some time and it is understood that a verbal offer was made on Friday.

However, the club have rejected it out of hand and consider the matter closed as the forward is not for sale.

Asked about the prospect of Salah leaving manager Jurgen Klopp: "The position remains the same, absolutely. No doubt about that. We cannot (sell Salah). That's how it is. Nothing else to say."

In addition to still being one of the world’s top players, Salah remains hugely attractive to Saudi Arabia as he is the most high-profile Arab player.

The Pro League’s transfer window does not close until next Thursday, which may still cause an issue for Liverpool as Al-Ittihad are one of the four clubs bankrolled by the country’s Public Investment Fund and therefore gives them access to greater finances than some of their contemporaries.

Klopp, for one, is unhappy about the discrepancy in deadlines.

"I don’t know how stable (the Saudi Pro League) is or how long it will stay like this, but I think the next two weeks will show how much of a challenge it is because whatever happens there, obviously, nobody (in Europe) can react any more," added Klopp.

"That’s something I think UEFA or whoever should have an eye on to solve that because we all have to protect the game and we want to."

Matheus Nunes has joined Manchester City

Manchester City grabbed the early headlines on transfer deadline day as they completed the signing of Matheus Nunes from Wolves.

After overcoming some minor sticking points in final negotiations over an initial £47.3m deal on Wednesday night, both clubs were able to come to an agreement on a £53million move - a club-record sale for Wolves.

The 25-year-old Portugal international was keen to move to the Etihad Stadium and did not train with Wolves in order to push the move through.

Nunes told the club's official website: "I'm so happy to be joining Manchester City, the champions of Europe and a club I've admired for a long time.

"The opportunity to work under Pep Guardiola, one of the greatest managers ever, and alongside some of the best players in the world was something I couldn't turn down.

"I've learned so much during my season at Wolves and I'm excited to continue improving in the Premier League, a division which brings the best out of me."

Midfielder Tommy Doyle, 21, heads the other way, joining the Molineux club on a season-long loan with the option to make the switch permanent next summer.

Cole Palmer is Chelsea's 11th signing of the summer

Doyle's exit follows that of fellow City academy product Cole Palmer, who has joined Chelsea on a seven-year contract.

Chelsea will pay an initial £40million for the 21-year-old with an additional £2.5m in possible add-ons.

"I'm excited to get started and it feels great to sign," Palmer told his new club's website.

"I've joined Chelsea because the project here sounds good and because of the platform I will have to try to showcase my talents. It is a young and hungry squad and, hopefully, we can do something special here."

It takes spending in the 16 months since the club was acquired by Todd Boehly's Clearlake Capital consortium to over £1billion, with Palmer the 12th player through the door during the summer transfer window.

Jonny Evans is back at Old Trafford

Manchester United have signed defenders Jonny Evans and Sergio Reguilon on loan until the end of the season.

Old Trafford academy graduate Evans (35) left in 2015, when the Northern Ireland international joined West Brom before enjoying a successful spell at Leicester.

Evans has been a free agent since his Foxes deal expired and, having initially signed a short-term contract with United in pre-season, returns on a deal until June 2024.

"I am delighted to join Manchester United, a place which has always felt like home," the centre-back, a three-time Premier League winner with the club, said.

"This club and the fans have shaped me as a player and as a person since I was 15 years old, and I am delighted to be back where it all began as part of this talented squad."

Left-back Reguilon has joined from Spurs after United lost Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia in that position.

Reguilon told the United website: "In life you have to be ready for everything and the chance to represent this great club with such an illustrious history is one that I could not turn down.

"I know that I can contribute to Manchester United this season; I am ready to fight for this group and show everyone my qualities."

United earlier confirmed the signing of Turkey international goalkeeper Altay Bayindir from Fenerbahce.

The 25-year-old has signed an initial four-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option of a further year.
Bayindir is the second goalkeeper signed by the Red Devils this summer and will provide competition to fellow new arrival Andre Onana.

"It is a huge honour to join Manchester United and become the first Turkish player to represent this incredible club," Bayindir said in the statement announcing his signing.

United could add further recruits on deadline day, with a loan move for Tottenham full-back Sergio Reguilon close to completion.

Joao Felix

Barcelona have signed Joao Felix on loan from Atletico Madrid and Joao Cancelo on loan from Manchester City.

Portugal forward Felix has joined Barcelona until June 2024, with no option for a permanent transfer.

"The club wishes to thank the player publicly for the financial effort made and his desire to wear the Barca shirt," read a Barcelona statement.

"Now, at just 23 years of age, and after expressing his long-held desire to be a blaugrana, Joao Felix has the chance to show the world his talent in a Barca shirt."

Felix said of his move on the Barcelona Twitter feed: "It was always my dream since I was a kid."

After breaking through at Benfica, Felix joined Atletico in the summer of 2019 and made more than 100 appearances in three-and-a-half seasons for them.

He spent the second half of last season on loan at Chelsea, scoring four goals in 20 appearances.

Barca later announced the arrival of Manchester City defender Cancelo, also for the duration of the 2023-24 season.

The 29-year-old Portuguese, who has made 154 appearances for City, spent time with Bayern Munich last term.

Callum Hudson-Odoi is among three signings by Forest

Nottingham Forest have made Callum Hudson-Odoi their third signing of a busy transfer deadline day.

The 22-year-old winger, capped three times by England, has signed a three-year contract after leaving Chelsea, where he broke through as a youngster and became a Champions League winner, making a total of 126 appearances.

"It's massive for me to be here and I can't wait to get started," Hudson-Odoi said. "It’s a new chapter for me.

"I know a couple of the boys already which was a big thing for me, and I obviously know the manager well, so it’s nice to be here and see familiar faces around."

Hudson-Odoi’s arrival followed the loan signing of Arsenal defender Nuno Tavares and the arrival of Argentina midfielder Nicolas Domínguez from Bologna on a five-year contract.

"Forest is an historic club which won two European Cups and to be part of it makes me really happy," Tavares said.

"I'm really happy to stay in the Premier League as it's the best league in the world and I'm thankful to Forest for giving me that opportunity."

Remo Freuler has left to join Bologna as part of the Dominguez deal.

Forest forward Brennan Johnson continues to be linked with a move to Tottenham.

Aston Villa brought in French defender Clement Lenglet on a season-long loan from Barcelona.

The centre-half spent last season on loan at Spurs, making 35 appearances in all competitions.

Ireland U21 defender James Abankwah has joined Charlton Athletic on loan from Italian top-flight side Udinese.

The 19-year-old joins the Addicks for the remainder of the 2023/24 campaign.

Abankwah has two Serie A appearances to his name - making his full league debut for Udinese against Juventus at the end of last season - and has represented the Republic of Ireland at U16, U18, U19 and U21 level.

The former St Pat's man said: "It feels great to be a Charlton player. I'm delighted to be here and I'm ready to go. I'm hoping to gain a lot of experience here and help the team win as many games as possible.

"I bring that winning mentality and I have also got a lot of speed, strength and I am a very powerful player. I like to bring that to the team to help as much as I can."

Derin Adewale joins a growing number of Irish youngsters in Italy

Bohemians left-back Derin Adewale has joined Serie A club Lecce for an undisclosed fee.

Having joined from St Kevin's Boys, he progressed through the Bohemians academy system, becoming a regular for the U19s, and winning the Enda McGuill Cup last year.

The 18-year-old made his first-team debut as a substitute against Sligo Rovers last November, and also started for the first team in Leinster Senior Cup wins against Crumlin United and Shelbourne this season.

Adewale said: "I would like to say a massive thanks to everyone at Bohemians football club - from all the staff to the players - for all the amazing memories and experiences I've had with you on and off the pitch, and for playing a huge role in my development both as a player and a person.

"The club has been like a second family to me, and I'll always cherish the time we spent together. As I am moving on now, I'll never forget the support and love you've shown me and I will have a special place in my heart for this club."

Celtic have completed the signing of Benfica midfielder Paulo Bernardo on a season-long loan with the option to buy the 21-year-old.

Manager Brendan Rodgers said: "Paulo is a young player who comes in with the opportunity to give us more strength in depth in that midfield area."
