Player Ratings: Courtney Brosnan to the rescue in Nigeria stalemate

The Republic of Ireland finished off their maiden FIFA Women's World Cup campaign with a final group match against Nigeria which ended in a scoreless stalemate.

Here's how the players rated in Brisbane.

Courtney Brosnan - 8

Dependable as always, the goalkeeper dealt with anything that came her way in the first half, whether it be deep crosses or sweeping up risky back passes, although Nigeria created little in the way of shots on target at that stage.

Six minutes into the second half as Nigeria began to up the ante, it appeared like Uchenna Kanu was heading in a certain goal from almost point blank range. But Brosnan somehow diverted the ball onto the crossbar with outstanding reflexes to get something on it.

She was also alert on 68 minutes to get out and grasp the ball with Nigerian forwards bearing down on her goal after a clever slipped ball behind the Irish line.

Niamh Fahey - 6

A rock at the heart of the Irish defence, the centre-back remained tenacious on the right side of the back three but was a little loose with her passes forward during a first half when Ireland had the lion's share of possession.

She improved somewhat on that front as the match wore on especially when aiming towards target woman Kyra Carusa.

She made way late in stoppage time to allow fellow veteran Diane Caldwell to make her World Cup debut.

Louise Quinn - 6

A consistent pillar at the back, her concession of possession straight to Uchenna Kanu led to a chance for Nigeria's potent forward Asisat Oshoala in the 14th minute. Distribiution was an issue in the first half with a few loose passes forward and both Quinn and Fahey's switches of play in the direction of Heather Payne proved inconsistent. Was part of a solid rearguard action in the second as Nigeria threatened more often.

Megan Connolly - 7

Not a natural centre-back but has acquitted herself reasonably well in her berth on the left of the back three, albeit with a few challenges given the subtlety of the role in previous fixtures.

She made a crunching challenge down the left on Michelle Alozie to show her defensive mettle and was also in a good position minutes later to cut out a couple of threatening crosses during the opening '45. As a midfielder by trade, she was the best outlet out from the back within the back three and was tasked with delivering the set-pieces.

Heather Payne may not have been fully fit but was solid on the right flank

Heather Payne - 6

Having missed the 2-1 defeat to Canada due to a hamstring injury in the warm-up, the right wing-back was restored to the starting line-up but with heavy strapping on her right leg.

Showed little sign of being ill at ease as her cross set up the first Irish chance of the game five minutes in and when she got forward again on 24 minutes to put in a deep cross towards Sinead Farrelly.

But she was unable to build on that during the second half.

Lily Agg - 7

The midfielder made her first start of the tournament and sat deep to the right of Ruesha Littlejohn and filled in well, especially in regard to her defensive brief.

She ultimately came off on 83 minutes as Vera Pauw made the first of her substitutions.

Lily Agg made her first start of the tournament

Ruesha Littlejohn - 7

Had run herself into the ground across the first two games and this time had the support of Lily Agg beside her and screened her defence well in both halves.

Did well to slow down Gift Monday deep in stoppage time as Ireland looked to not gift Nigeria a late Monday night goal and ultimately helped to preserve the clean sheet.

Katie McCabe - 6

The captain came close to a goal on five minutes but dragged her shot wide. It set the template for herself in a match which required her to be further forward than against Australia and Canada.

Her frustration was evident as she incurred a yellow card with 22 minutes to go as Ireland's grip on the game faded.

Did whip in a high, looping cross towards Kyra Carusa that wasn't far off the mark in the final ten minutes.

Denise O'Sullivan - 7

Ireland's playmaker had been deployed in a deeper role in the first two games but was given more licence to operate between the lines further forward this time with the extra protection provided by Lily Agg within the double pivot.

In the 21st minute, she suddenly found space, running at the Nigerian defence before slipping a pass through for Carusa.

Was dangerous with her movement into pockets of space while also being on hand for interceptions and duels higher up the field.

On the hour mark, she had a chance to shoot which was blocked after the ball was layed off by Kyra Carusa.

Moved further back in the late stages after Agg was subbed off.

While it was a frustrating outcome, she was all smiles afterwards as she greeted one of her former club coaches, Nigeria manager Randy Waldrum.

Denise O'Sullivan played further forward than in the first two games

Sinead Farrelly - 6

A player who thrives in pockets and with the ball at her feet, her first meaningful touch came in the first chance created when she nudged Heather Payne's cross into space for Katie McCabe to run onto and shoot. Midway through the first half, she was unable to get purchase on the ball after a deep cross from the right by Heather Payne.

Stayed on for the full 90 minutes for the first time in her Irish international career but was unable to really stamp her authority on the occasion.

Kyra Carusa - 7

A tireless presser of the ball in what is often a thankless role, Carusa's first opening came midway through the half when Denise O'Sullivan slipped her in but she couldn't make more of the opportunity, although whether she was onside or not would have been interesting to see.

Had another glimmer ten minutes before the break in the second phase after a set-piece as she nodded a ball towards goal. But under pressure, her effort lacked the requisite power to trouble the Nigerian keeper.

In the 61st minute, she collected a Katie McCabe throw and cleverly laid the ball off to her right for O'Sullivan whose shot was quickly closed down and with ten minutes to go, was not far off getting her head onto a McCabe cross which resulted in a collision with the goalkeeper.
