Aoife Mannion, Megan Campbell & Leanne Kiernan miss out as Vera Pauw names her World Cup squad

Aoife Mannion, Megan Campbell and Leanne Kiernan have all missed out on selection for the Republic of Ireland's 23-player World Cup squad.

Vera Pauw has sprung a few surprises in her final selection having spent the last five days agonising over who would make the cut.

Mannion tweaked knee ligaments in Manchester United training a month ago and only had a knee brace removed on Monday. There had been cautious optimism that the Solihull-born centre-half would be okay, but it seems that was misplaced with the 27-year-old just having too much to do to be ready for the opener against Australia in Sydney on 20 July.

Campbell withdrew from Ireland's double-header against the USA in April and failed to feature in any of Liverpool's final six games.

She's a free agent after her contract with the Merseysiders expired, and though the Drogheda native has had little game time in the last couple of months, her huge throw-in is such an asset that there had been a belief she'd make the plane. Campbell has also previously shown an ability to seamlessly return to action following lengthy lay-offs.

Claire O'Riordan scored a fine header against Zambia

Mannion and Campbell's omissions means Claire O'Riodan - so impressive against Zambia - comes in while Izzy Atkinson is the bolter, the versatile Rush woman getting the nod having also done well against the Africans last week.

The West Ham player's inclusion is all the more impressive when you consider she was only drafted into the training squad as extra cover for Campbell.

Kiernan always faced an uphill battle to make Australia having missed most of the club season with Liverpool due to an ankle injury. She played the first half of last Thursday's 3-1 win against Zambia, showing some rust but also flashes of her capability.

Vera Pauw spoke to RTÉ soccer correspondent Tony O'Donoghue after naming the squad

With Heather Payne being deployed as a right wing-back in the last three games, it seemed she would squeeze in, but Pauw has gone with Marissa Sheva, Abbie Larkin, Amber Barret and Kyra Carusa as her attacking options. Payne, of course, can also operate up front.

Jamie Finn was a key player in the qualification campaign and while she is not in the 23, she is one of the three training players permitted to travel Down Under, along with Harriet Scott and goalkeeper Sophie Whitehouse. They will be allowed to accompany the squad throughout the tournament but will not be eligible for selection after 19 July, their presence acting as a safety net in case of illness or injury.

As well as the prestige of being part of Ireland's first ever appearance at a Women's World Cup, there's a financial boost for the players, who are each guaranteed at least €27,400 after FIFA set aside a pool of €102.8m in prize money to divided among the 32 squads depending on how far they progress.

The selected members of the panel will be part of a Super Bowl-style media day in UCD tomorrow before attention turns to the farewell friendly against France at Tallaght Stadium on Thursday 6 July.

The following day Ireland fly to Brisbane where they will set up camp ahead of their massive World Cup group opener against Australia at the 83,500-capacity Accor Stadium in Sydney, a match that has now sold out.
