Derry City striker Colm Whelan will miss the rest of the season after suffering another serious injury.

The Republic of Ireland U-21 international had looked certain to head to England last year when he was still at UCD, but an ACL injury in May 2022 put paid to a switch.

He moved to the Candystripes last November and made a dream, belated debut in April when he came off the bench to score against Cork City. However, just two weeks later, Whelan was stretchered off during the clash against Shamrock Rovers at the Ryan McBrode Brandywell Stadium.

Derry have now confirmed that, following knee surgery, he will not play again this campaign.

Ruaidhri Higgins' men - second in the league, four points off Shamrock Rovers - host fourth-placed Bohemians on Friday.
