Shelbourne came from behind against Sligo Rovers to win their third game of the season thanks to a freak own goal.

The Bit O'Red completely dominated the first half, with Danny Lafferty opening his account for the club in his first start.

But the old adage of 'a game of two halves' was never truer, with the Dubliners coming from behind in the second half to take all three points.

Matty Smith netted the equaliser, before an embarrassing own goal from John Mahon gifted the hosts all three points a drama-filled game.

The north Dubliners won just one of their five previous games before tonight's encounter at Tolka Park with Damien Duff's side scoring four goals in their opening eight games.

But while Shels' are goal-shy so far this season, they have kept four clean sheets, something which the Bit O'Red have failed to do so far, conceding in all eight of their games before travelling to Drumcondra.

John Russell's side picked up an important win against Dundalk at Oriel Park on Good Friday, with Shels drawing 0-0 with the league's bottom side UCD on the same night.

The hosts started brightly, with Sligo's Luke McNicholas called into action with just six minutes played after Jack Moylan linked up with Matty Smith inside the Rovers area.

The former's initial shot took a touch off Nando Pijnaker, with the second attempt kept out by a fine save from the Mayo native.

The visitors were looking dangerous on the counter, particularly with the pace of Will Fitzgerald on the left wing.

The first warning for the hosts came on seven minutes when the former Derry City winger burst down the left, before crossing into the box. The cross came into the path of Faroese international Stefan Radosavljevic who poked wide of the net from yards out.

Radosavljevic smacked the crossbar on 18 minutes after he was picked out by Fitzgerald, who again played the role of provider.

Conor Kearns in the Shels' goal comfortably got behind Fabrice Hartmann's free-kick on 28 minutes, and two minutes later the former Galway United goalkeeper pulled off the save of the game, denying Nando Pijnaker at the far post from Hartmann's corner.

Sligo were making life difficult for the hosts and were rewarded for their efforts on 36 minutes when they went ahead.

Hartmann's corners were causing trouble for the Shels defence, and he picked out Lafferty on 36 minutes who fired into the net with his first goal in his first start for the club.

They may have dominated the first half, but Russell's side were about to face a different Shels in the second half.

Duff shuffled his pack and brought on Kameron Ledwidge, Evan Caffrey and Shane Farrell, a move that would soon pay off.

Seven minutes after the restart, the sides were level. Farrell's ball dropped over the head of Frank Liivak, filling it at right-back for the visitors. The Estonian mis-timed his leap, and Smith was lurking behind him and drove at goal to bring his side level.

Damien Duff's half-time switches proved crucial

And five minutes later, Tolka Park was bouncing as Shels went ahead.

Farrell's long ball looked harmless, until it was headed on by Mahon with pace towards his own goals, wrong-footing his goalkeeper McNicholas.

The win sees Shels leapfrog Sligo, moving into fifth place with their opponents, who started the day in third, dropping to sixth.
