The death has been announced of former Shelbourne player and UCD manager Theo Dunne at the age of 85.

Dunne won an FAI Cup medal with Shels in 1963, captaining the side in their subsequent European Cup Winners Cup tie against Barcelona.

As a manager, Dunne had a long association with UCD, right from when the side entered the League of Ireland in 1979.

A famous FAI Cup success followed in 1984 when, against the odds, the Students upset warm favourites Shamrock Rovers in the final after a replay.

Dunne's son Tommy followed him into football, where he enjoyed league success with Derry City and would later go on to manage Cork City and Galway United. His nephew, Richard, had a long career in the Premier League and won 80 caps for the Republic of Ireland.
