A sublime volley from Republic of Ireland international Jeff Hendrick earned Reading a battling 2-2 draw at home to Watford in the Championship.

The Hornets squandered a two goal lead, Ismaila Sarr and debutant defender Ryan Porteous putting the away side in total control.

Tom Ince's penalty however breathed life back into the contest Hendrick's 80th-minute strike, a first-time volley from a corner kick, secured a share of the spoils.

Cyrus Christie was the match-winner for Hull, who move into the top half of the table on the back of the 1-0 victory over Cardiff.

It is a fourth win in the last half a dozen games for Hull, with the right-back showing clever feet on the hour mark in the area before curling the ball with his left foot in the far corner.

Burnley extended their lead at the top of the table to seven points with a 3-0 win at Norwich as Sheffield United were held by Rotherham.

Josh Cullen was in midfield for the victors, with international team-mate Andrew Omabamidele at the heart of the Canaries defence.

Anass Zaroury set Burnley on their way in the eighth minute after a Tim Krul error and, though they had to wait until after half-time to break down the Canaries again, two goals in six minutes from substitute Vitinho and debutant Hjalmar Ekdal sealed a comfortable win.

A ninth straight league win felt even more valuable as the Blades dropped points in a goalless draw with their South Yorkshire rivals, with Anel Ahmedhodzic and Billy Sharp missing presentable chances.

John Egan was centre-half for United, with Chiedozie Ogbene playing the full 90 minutes for Rotherham.

It also temporarily lifted the Clarets 20 points clear of third place, though Middlesbrough, with Darragh Lenihan at the heart of their defence, narrowed that gap slightly with a 3-0 win over Blackpool later in the day.

Chuba Akpom scored twice before Paddy McNair made the result certain. CJ Hamilton played the full game for the visitors.

Fourth-placed Luton stayed level on points with Boro, having played a game less, as Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu's early goal earned them a 1-0 win over Stoke.

Millwall and Sunderland remain just outside the play-off places after a 1-1 draw, Dennis Cirkin's goal for the Black Cats cancelling out Jake Cooper's opener. The two teams are separated in the table by eight-placed Blackburn, who play Wigan on Monday.

Scott Hogan was on the scoresheet as Birmingham twice came from behind to beat Swansea 4-3 in south Wales.

Blues led through Hogan's penalty but Joel Piroe's brace helped put Swansea 3-2 up, Liam Cullen with their other goal while Tahith Chong scored for Birmingham, for whom Kevin Long started at centre-half.

Lukas Jutkiewicz headed a 90th-minute equaliser and there was still time for more drama when Auston Trusty - whose extra-time own goal saw them knocked out of the FA Cup by Blackburn on Tuesday night - scored a winner seven minutes into stoppage time.

Ryan Manning played the full 90 minutes for the Swans.

Bristol City won 2-1 at Preston, Mark Sykes and Sam Bell on target before Ched Evans pulled one back.

Alan Browne and Robbie Brady were replaced late on for Preston, with Greg Cunningham introduced as a sub.

Jimmy Dunne was part of a QPR side that claimed a 1-1 draw away to Huddersfield, with Martyn Waghorn (Huddersfield) and Jamal Lowe (QPR) among the goals.
