Former Ipswich, Portsmouth and Bohemians goalkeeper Brian Murphy has retired from playing.

The veteran stopper, who spent the last three seasons at Waterford, made the announcement on social media.

Murphy was on the books at Manchester City as a youngster before eventually making his first serious strides in the game at Swansea.

He enjoyed three years at Dalymount Park from 2007, winning back-to-back League of Ireland titles in his second and third seasons there, before going back across the water for spells at Ipswich, QPR, Portsmouth and Cardiff.

Having represented the Republic of Ireland at Under-16 level, Murphy was called into the Ireland senior squad on occasion throughout his career but was never capped at senior level.

Murphy signed for hometown club Waterford in 2020 and spent three seasons at the RSC ahead of his retirement.

"From the Premier League to the League Of Ireland and everything in between, I have been extremely fortunate to be part of incredible clubs," Murphy's statement read.

"To all the managers, coaches, teammates and supporters that have helped me live and breathe this game for so long, thank you so much.

"To my family and friends, thank you for being there at every step of the way. I owe you more than you will ever know."
