Ollie Horgan has returned to League of Ireland management after less than a month away, joining Galway United as assistant under John Caulfield.

Galway-born Horgan is one of the longest-serving League Of Ireland managers in recent history after his tenure with Finn Harps which spanned almost a decade.

He earned promotion with Harps to the Premier Division on two occasions, and in his first season, he brought them to their first FAI Cup semi-final in 14 years.

Horgan has been credited with miraculous escapes from relegation with the Donegal outfit on low budgets thanks to savvy work in the transfer market, but did oversee relegation this year when over half of his squad was recruited by other clubs prior to the start of the campaign.

Caulfield, who has failed to get United promoted in the last two full seasons at Eamonn Deacy Park, has been on the lookout for a new number two.

Two of the most recognisable characters within the League of Ireland will now team up in the bid to lead the Tribesmen to the top flight again.

Horgan said of the role: "I'm looking forward to the challenge, we all know how difficult and demanding the league is, but I’m looking forward to getting started."

He will make a quick return to Finn Park in coming up against his former club on the opening night of the 2023 First Division season.

United are set to announce more new signings shortly.

Waterford FC are expected to lead the way in challenging for promotion, while Harps are a new face to the division.

Bray Wanderers and Wexford have made impressive starts to their recruitment drives in what is set to be another competitive race for promotion and the play-offs.
