Fowler feels 'anxious' Nunez too eager to impress in early days of Liverpool career

Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler feels Darwin Nunez needs to "calm down a little bit" in his bid to succeed at the club ahead of their clash with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

After competing in the top two in recent seasons, including winning the league, the Reds have struggled this season and face a battle to even qualify for the Champions League.

Injuries have hurt Liverpool this campaign with focus on the impact of new signing Nunez who has in theory replaced Sadio Mane after his departure for Bayern Munich.

Injuries to Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz have put even more importance on Nunez doing well at the club.

The Uruguayan has scored three league goals and netted in the win over Napoli in Europe in midweek with signs he is settling into the team in Anfield.

Fowler said: "With Nunez, and his goals have been brilliant and perhaps he could have had a few more, he is perhaps too anxious to impress. He just needs to calm down a little bit and then more goals will come.

"He has all the attributes he needs to be a top player, certainly under the tenureship of Jurgen, his staff, and all the fans. He knows he is in a good place and he will score goals for Liverpool.

"The fans are willing him to be at his very best because they know he's a good player. Okay, it’s been a bit stop-start after getting foolishly sent off and having a few aches and pains. The club have done what they needed to in terms of trying to get him up to speed. I know for a fact that he worked very, very hard in pre-season.

"Liverpool is based on energy and drive and he was up to speed with that. The fans see that, someone who is anxious to do really well. I think the fans are aware of what he’s going through, they will do everything they can to get him to be the player that we all want to see.

"I do think he has been anxious and it will come. It's far from it that I'm having a go at him. We all want to see him do well and take that little anxiety out of his game because it won't help him in the long run. He has to focus on his job and he will do that with the players around him."

The reasons behind Liverpool’s drop in form have been debated, with injuries and an aging team cited.

Fowler does not believe it is any one factor, including the loss of Mane, but feels it has been felt.

He said: "I'm a massive fan of Mane, he was probably my favourite player. I love players who get you off the edge of your seat. He is that player. I think it's unfair on the players who have come in (to blame Mane's exit on loss of form).

"Before he got injured Luis Diaz was arguably Liverpool's best player this year and he is playing the position Mane was. I can see why people are saying it, and Sadio Mane is a brilliant player, but him leaving is not the reason why the results are what they are.

"It doesn't matter what club it is; if a player of Mane's calibre goes, you're going to miss him."

It seems certain Liverpool will add to their squad in the coming year, with the January transfer window last then two months away.

It could be that Klopp waits until the summer to try to boost numbers and Fowler feels it’s vital they add more than just a midfielder.

"I think it's every position (that should be considered). We've seen how good the squad was last year. You had players fighting for different positions and you want the squad to be bigger.

"You want players who are playing to be kept out of the team (because the squad is so strong). Competition for places can bring out the best in players.

"Everyone keeps mentioning about the positions that need to be filled and I think it's fairly obvious Liverpool will be looking at the midfield area in the future. In terms of who, I haven't got any inside information obviously but there are some really good players who Liverpool could do with it. "
