Chelsea are closing in on the £70m (€82.4m) signing of Leicester defender Wesley Fofana.
The clubs have been in protracted negotiations for the centre-half, who has been a long-term target of the Blues.
It is understood there has finally been a breakthrough in those talks six days before the transfer window closes.
Fofana has been made to train with Leicester's Under-21s after Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers revealed he was not in the right frame of mind to feature against Southampton last weekend.
The 21-year-old Frenchman has made 52 appearances for Leicester since joining from St Etienne in October 2020.
Chelsea are also understood to be continuing their pursuits of Everton winger Anthony Gordon and former Arsenal skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Newcastle United have signed Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad on a long-term deal, shattering their transfer record to recruit the Sweden striker.
The clubs did not disclose the fee but British media reported Newcastle paid around £59m (€69.5m) to sign the 22-year-old.
The fee eclipses the £40m pounds Newcastle paid for Bruno Guimaraes in January and Joelinton in 2019.
Isak is Newcastle's fourth major signing since the close season after Nick Pope, Matt Targett and Sven Botman.
"It is a great, historical club that I think anyone would like to play for, with amazing fans. They were a big part of why I came here and also the club's project, which is one that I really believe in," Isak said.
"You always want to go into a team and know how they play. I think Newcastle play very attractive football and I want to be a part of that."
The striker, who is 6 feet 4 inches tall, has become a permanent fixture in Sweden's front line, playing 37 times for his country and scoring nine goals since his debut in 2017. At Real Sociedad, he scored 44 goals in 132 appearances.
"He is an outstanding talent who is capable of making a big contribution to the team," Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said.
"He is technically very good, with a mix of attributes that will complement us, but he is also at a great age to grow with this club."
Newcastle are sixth in the table after three games and next play away at Wolverhampton Wanderers in the league on Sunday.

Everton have signed striker Neal Maupay from Brighton for an undisclosed fee.
The 26-year-old Frenchman scored 27 goals in 110 appearances over three years on the south coast.
Maupay had been linked with a move to Nottingham Forest but Toffees boss Frank Lampard has now secured his signature on a three-year contract.
"Everton is a great club with unbelievable fans and I am so, so happy to be here," Maupay told evertontv.
"It feels amazing. It was an easy choice for me when I started to talk with the club. I knew straight away I wanted to play for Everton and help the club to succeed. I'm excited and it's a new challenge for me.
"I will do everything I can for Everton. That's what the fans want - they want players that are ready to give their best, and ready to fight
"When I step on the pitch, I will run, I will tackle, I will try to make assists and score goals. Whatever the team needs, I will do it, because I want to be successful and I want my team to win."
Maupay was not signed in time to face his former club Brentford on Saturday.

Hull City have confirmed the signing of Republic of Ireland international Cyrus Christie on a two-year contract.
The 29-year-old has joined the Championship club on a free transfer after being released by Fulham at the end of last season, and there is an option to add an extra year on to the deal.
Christie started his career at Coventry, where he made 119 appearances, and joined Derby in 2014.
He made 119 appearances for the Rams too in three seasons at Pride Park before moving to Middlesbrough for one year and then joining Fulham in 2018.
Christie, who has 30 international caps to his name, helped the Cottagers earn promotion to the Premier League and has more recently had loan stints at Nottingham Forest and Swansea.
A message from the man himself! 😁
