Newcastle are on the verge of signing Sweden striker Alexander Isak, who has travelled to England to complete a move from Real Sociedad.

With uncertainty surrounding the fitness of Callum Wilson, who has been sent for a scan on a hamstring problem which has been suggested will sideline him for at least a month, Newcastle look set to further strengthen their attacking options.

A picture shared widely on social media showed Isak, 22, arriving on Tyneside on Thursday afternoon, the player having flown in from Spain to put the final touches to a reported club-record £60m transfer.

Manager Eddie Howe refused to be drawn on the growing rumours following the Carabao Cup win at Tranmere on Wednesday evening.

Speaking following the game, Howe said: "It's difficult to put a number on it, but at least one (more signing).

"We were looking at the attacking areas of the pitch, I don’t think that’s a huge secret. I won’t go into any more detail on that."

Newcastle have already brought in goalkeeper Nick Pope and defenders Sven Botman and Matt Targett during the summer window.

Should the club’s latest deal be completed in time, Isak, who turns 23 in September, could be available to make his debut in Sunday’s Premier League match at Wolves.

Howe’s side are unbeaten so far in the new campaign, having played out a thrilling 3-3 draw against champions Manchester City at St James’ Park last weekend.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers has kept the door open to reintegrate Wesley Fofana back into the Foxes squad if he fails to move to Chelsea.

The Blues have had three bids rejected for the defender ahead of next week's transfer deadline.

Fofana is training with theUnder-23s having missed a senior training session last week and will not feature when Leicester go to Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

The latest bid, rejected on Tuesday morning, was worth £70m but – amid the transfer saga – Rodgers left a way back for Fofana if he stays at the King Power Stadium.

"It’s always about the commitment and when the players are ready to commit to the team and the ethos of the team," he said.

"It has been a challenge for Wesley, if you are not in the right frame of mind – and you have to respect the welfare of the player – we have to push on.

"The window will shut in the not-too distant future and a lot of things become much clearer after that finishes.

"He will not be available for the weekend. He has trained with the under-23 squad. I’m not sure (if there will be another bid), my concentration is with the players we have and the team. I can’t lose energy thinking so much about it. It is something which will be done between the clubs. Until that happens we have to continue to work with what we have."

Alli only joined Everton earlier this year

Everton forward Dele Alli has joined Besiktas on a season-long loan, the Premier League club have confirmed.

The former Tottenham playmaker had travelled to Istanbul to finalise the move to the Turkish outfit on Wednesday.

Alli, 26, is hoping to reignite his career after failing to make an impact at Goodison Park since his free transfer from Spurs in January.

A statement from Everton read: "Dele has completed his loan move to Turkish side Besiktas for the remainder of the 2022/23 season."

The club have not confirmed whether the deal includes an option to buy.

Everton signed Alli as they battled relegation last winter in the hope he could rediscover the form that made him one of England's brightest prospects in his early career.

Alli had fallen down the pecking order at Spurs and dropped out of the reckoning for the national team.

Alli, who has 37 England caps, went on to make 11 appearances as the Toffees avoided the drop but did not score. He has appeared twice as a substitute this season.

Che Adams has been in fine form

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl insists in-form striker Che Adams will "definitely not" be sold this summer amid links with Premier League rivals Everton.

Scotland international Adams came off the bench to score twice in last weekend's 2-1 top-flight win at Leicester and followed it up in midweek with another double in Saints’ 3-0 Carabao Cup success at Cambridge.

Hasenhuttl expects incomings and outgoings before the transfer window closes next week but is adamant his top scorer will not be among those leaving St Mary’s.

"I can categorically say that he is our player and he will stay with us and that we love him, especially when he scores goals," said the Austrian. "We will definitely not sell him in the summer.

"You are maybe more (informed) in the rumours than I am because I am more concentrating on how I can help him to score goals.

"He’s good in the moment, he’s on fire and this is a signal of feeling comfortable in the situation he’s in."

Premier League clubs have already broken their spending record for a summer transfer window with the deadline still a week away, according to analysis from Deloitte.

Gross spending in the top flight stood at £1.5billion at the start of Thursday, exceeding 2017's record of £1.43bn spent in a summer window.

It is also more than the £1.44bn spent in the whole of last season and, with the all-time record for a Premier League season standing at £1.86bn – also in 2017-18 – it is not out of the question that the summer window alone could surpass that mark.

Premier League clubs have signed 135 players this summer, already more than in the 2019 or 2020 summer windows and closing on last August’s 148. Two-thirds of those have seen a fee paid, including 14 separate players moving for reported fees in excess of £30m.

That list is topped by Darwin Nunez’s £85.5m move to Liverpool, while Chelsea have spent a reported £60m on Marc Cucurella, £47.5m on Raheem Sterling and £34m on Kalidou Koulibaly.

Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal have each spent two fees over £30m and Tottenham laid out £60m to bring striker Richarlison from Everton, while Newcastle, West Ham and Wolves have also contributed to the figure. Morgan Gibbs-White’s move from the latter to Nottingham Forest could join the list if he triggers the add-ons in the deal.

The record 2017 window included Romelu Lukaku’s £75m move to Manchester United and Chelsea’s £60m capture of Alvaro Morata, while Manchester City spent big on Kyle Walker, Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy and Ederson. The January window then included big-money moves for centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Aymeric Laporte to Liverpool and City respectively and striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Arsenal.

Sead Haksabanovic (L) has won 28 caps for Montenegro

Sead Haksabanovic believes he will fit right into Ange Postecoglou's Celtic style after completing his move from Rubin Kazan.

The Montenegro winger has signed a five-year contract after instructing his agent to fix a deal with Celtic.

The 23-year-old, who was formerly with West Ham, was keen to leave Russia on a permanent deal after spending the final few months of last season on loan with Djurgardens in his native Sweden.

Haksabanovic told Celtic TV that it felt "amazing" to sign for Celtic.

"What I know about Celtic is only good things and I’m very happy to be here," he said. "I heard about it around a month ago and as soon as I heard that Celtic wanted me I said to my agent that he had to make it happen because this is where I want to play.’

"It’s an amazing club with good players, fans and history. I’ve been watching some games and I think the team play in the same style as me.

"I’ve been speaking to the manager as well and we had a good chat, speaking about how he sees me as a player and how he wants me to fit into his system and everything sounded good so that was it for me.

"I’m a playmaker with some flair, I’m good in one-on-ones, I have a powerful shot, I’m quick and I’ll give everything for this club.

"Of course, I’m very excited to play in the Champions League, it’s the best competition you can play in and that’s a dream for me as a kid, so to see myself playing in that is very cool."
