Groups of death likely in draw for shorter Champions League group stage

The draw for the Champions League group stage takes place on Thursday in Istanbul at 5pm Irish time - with a very strong potential for a group of death.

While Pot 1 - made up of holders Real Madrid, the other champions of Europe's biggest leagues and the Europa League winners - contains some of the continent's elite, the fact that Eintracht Frankfurt, AC Milan, Porto and Ajax make up half of the contenders opens up the possibility of some massive meetings early in the competition.

Indeed, with Pot 2 containing Liverpool, Chelsea, Barcelona, Juventus and Tottenham among others, it would appear to more than hold its own with the top seedings.

Manchester City could end up with Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund and Marseille, while Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Marseille is a possibility for the other English clubs. Celtic and Rangers could find themselves with Paris St Germain, Liverpool and Inter.

The Old Firm pair are here together for the first time since 2007/08, and both are in the fourth pot.

Celtic's name in one of the pots for the first time since the 2017-18 season with last season's league success earning them a ticket straight through. Rangers reached the group stage for the first time in 12 years following Wednesday’s 1-0 win over PSV Eindhoven.

Teams from the same league cannot meet in the group stage, but there is nothing to stop an English team being drawn against a Scottish opponent.

Liverpool lost last year's final to Real Madrid

The first group matches will take place on 6/7 September, with the final round on 1/2 November - a nine-week window rather than 12, due to the Qatar World Cup.

Pot 1: Real Madrid, Eintracht Frankfurt, Manchester City, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Paris St-Germain, Porto, Ajax.

Pot 2: Liverpool, Chelsea, Barcelona, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla, Leipzig, Tottenham.

Pot 3: Borussia Dortmund, Salzburg, Shakhtar Donetsk, Inter Milan, Napoli, Benfica, Sporting Lisbon, Bayer Leverkusen.

Pot 4: Rangers, Marseille, Copenhagen, Club Bruges, Celtic, Viktoria Plzen, Maccabi Haifa, Dinamo Zagreb.
