Evan Ferguson celebrates with team-mate Andy Moran after scoring Brighton's third goal

Evan Ferguson scored his first senior goal for Brighton and Hove Albion as they dispatched Forest Green Rovers 3-0 in the Carabao Cup second round.

The former Bohemians' striker led the line and assisted the first goal for Deniz Undav in a comfortable win for Graham Potter's side.

Ferguson was a menace all night, his link-up play and his ability to get in behind caused headaches for the League One side.

It comes at a very good time for the Ireland U21 international as they play Israel next month for the chance to go to their first ever international tournament.

Andrew Moran came on and played 35 minutes, while James Furlong made his debut with just over five minutes remaining.

Elsewhere Newcastle survived a scare against League Two Tranmere to claim a place in the third round with a 2-1 success.

The Premier League side were stunned when Elliott Nevitt gave Rovers the lead after an excellent through ball from Irish under-21 right-back Lee O'Connor put Tranmere in behind the Magpie defence. The goal came against the run of play at Prenton Park but Jamaal Lascelles levelled before the break.

Chris Wood eased nerves by heading Newcastle ahead from a Kieran Trippier corner seven minutes after the interval and Eddie Howe's side held on.

Leeds joined them in the next round after edging out Barnsley 3-1 in a feisty Yorkshire derby at Elland Road.

A fine strike from Luis Sinisterra, who then won a penalty for Mateusz Klich to double the lead, gave the hosts a strong advantage but the Tykes responded.

Mads Andersen pulled one back with a diving header and the visitors were denied an equaliser when Callum Styles’ penalty hit the post.

Former Cork City centre-half Conor McCarthy started, while fellow Irish young players William Hondemarck and Luca Connell arrived from the bench.

Tempers flared at times in the second half but Klich’s second before the hour wrapped up the win.

Daryl Horgan played the 90 minutes for Wycombe Wanderers but was unable to prevent his side from being defeated 3-1 by Championship side Bristol City. Kane Wilson and Antoine Semenyo scored late on at Adams Park.

Dylan Kadji’s early effort was cancelled out by Ali Al-Hamadi but Wilson turned the tie back in the Robins’ favour in the 77th minute and Semenyo sealed it in stoppage time.
