Tim Clancy: Saints could have scored more in Sofia

St Patrick's Athletic recorded a memorable away scalp on Thursday night when they beat a fancied CSKA side 1-0 in Sofia thanks to super sub Serge Atakayi's late strike.

But manager Tim Clancy thought his team were full value for their win and that they could have scored even more in the Europa Conference League third qualifying round first leg clash.

"We knew it was going to be really difficult, coming here against a very good side," he said.

"We had to defend well, which we did, we limited CSKA to shots from distance and crosses into the box. I thought we dealt really well with set-pieces.

"We got a bit of luck on the counter-attack, Serge [Atakayi] has got a lot of pace, a short back-pass but for once this season it's us getting a goal like that and not one against us.

"I felt there were certain instances in the game where if our decision-making and execution in the final third had been better we might have got a goal or two more."

The Saints will now welcome the shell-shocked Bulgarians back to Tallaght Stadium for the second leg
next Thursday.

"It gives us a slight advantage coming away one-nil but it might give us a bit more belief," said Clancy.

"We have a good team but it’s a very young, energetic side.

"It’ll probably be a tougher game than tonight. If we have any chance to progress we’re going to have to defend better and work harder, and hopefully be able to take a chance too."
