Former Sligo Rovers and St Pat's midfielder Rhys McCabe has been named player-manager of Scottish outfit Airdrie aged just 29.

McCabe takes his first steps into management at the League One side alongside his cousin Callum Fordyce, who will act as player-assistant.

McCabe spent two and a half years playing in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division. He moved to Sligo from Dunfermliner midway through the 2017 campaign, and headed to Inchicore in early 2019.

In 2020 he returned to his native Scotland to play for Brechin City, then Queen of the South, before moving on to Airds in the summer of 2021.

Earlier this month McCabe was part of the Airdrie team that were beaten 3-2 over two legs by Queen's Park in a play-off to earn promotion to the Championship.

"It's good to get signed up and get things over the line as quick as we have, so I’m excited, raring to go and looking forward to getting onto the pitch," McCabe told airdriefc.com.

"I’ve always made it clear that towards the latter stages of my career it was an avenue I’d like to go down. Obviously the opportunity has come up to dive straight in, so it’s one that I’m excited about."
