Portsmouth manager Danny Cowley: Gavin Bazunu's League One Team of the Year omission 'ridiculous'

Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu's omission from the EFL League One Team of the Year has left his Portsmouth manager Danny Cowley flabbergasted.

The 20-year-old, who is coming towards the end of his season-long loan from Manchester City, has enjoyed a strong season with the English south-coast club.

The Dubliner has made 42 league appearances, keeping 16 clean sheets ahead of Tuesday night's clash against Wigan Athletic.

But his performances did not yield inclusion in the seasonal XI for the English third tier which was announced on Sunday evening.

Plymouth Argyle's Michael Cooper is the goalkeeper selected for the 2021-22 campaign, while Bazunu's Ireland team-mate James McClean did make the cut among the outfielders for his form at Wigan.

In comments to Hamsphire Live, Cowley, who has previously described Bazunu as the best goalkeeper he has worked with to date, expressed dismay that the former Shamrock Rovers shot-stopper was not included.

"I don't know who makes those decisions. How?" he said.

"Just tell me how he didn't get in the team? Whoever picks it, I don't know, it is one of the most ridiculous decisions ever."

Meanwhile, Cowley praised seven-time Ireland cap Ronan Curtis after he reached the 50-goal mark for Portsmouth after scoring a brace in the 3-1 win over Gillingham on Saturday.

"It's an excellent achievement when you consider that he’s mostly a wide player and he’s someone who gives his all for the team," he said of the former Derry City forward on the club website.

"Ronan is very competitive and robust, while he always carries a goal threat and his assists have gone up considerably."
