Galway United missed out on the chance to move level on points with Cork City at the top of the SSE Airtricity League First Division.

John Caulfield's side drew 1-1 at home to Wexford FC.

Aaron Dobbs gave the visitors a 17th-minute lead but second-placed Galway eventually salvaged a point thanks to Stephen Walsh's equaliser three minutes from time.

The result leaves Galway two points adrift of leaders Cork and three clear of Waterford.

Meanwhile, Longford Town took the midlands derby spoils against Athlone Town.

Darren Craven and Michael Barker gave the hosts a 2-0 win with goals early in the second half.

The victory moves Longford up to fourth, with two games in hand on the three sides above them.

Athlone remain winless after eight games and are bottom of the table on one point.
