The Republic of Ireland will compete in the Pinatar Cup in Murcia, Spain next month alongside Belgium, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Scotland, Slovakia and Wales.

Vera Pauw's team travel to Sweden on Tuesday, 12 April for a crunch World Cup qualifier, but before then they will sharpen up in an eight-team competition that should serve as valuable preparation.

Ireland will play Poland in their first game on Wednesday 16 February, with the winners meeting either Hungary or Russia in a semi-final on Saturday 19 February.

Their final game of the tournament will be played on Tuesday 22 February with Ireland's opponent dependent on how their semi-final ends. They could either be in the main tournament final or else in a tie for third place, a duel for fifth place or a contest for seventh.

There is an agreement in place that Ireland will not play Slovakia in the third game - if drawn together - due to the teams being in the same World Cup qualifying group. Ireland drew 1-1 with the Slovaks in Dublin back in November.

Pauw has welcomed the opportunity for her players to test themselves against different opposition ahead of the resumption of World Cup qualifying campaign. They currently sit second in Group A.

"It's important that we get together as a squad and play at least one game before we take on Sweden in April," she said.

"This tournament provides us with three games so that is ideal for our preparation to work with the players and give them game-time. Our focus is very much on the qualifying game against Sweden, but we plan on giving players opportunities to play in these games and that will help us in our overall preparations."
