There was disappointing for the Irish players in the Continental Cup on Wednesday as both Arsenal and Liverpool were knocked out at the quarter-final stage.

Katie McCabe played the entire game for the WSL-leading Gunners, but they were beaten 1-0 by Manchester United thanks tot a late Alessia Russo effort.

Niamh Fahey started for Liverpool, who also came out on the wrong side of 1-0 scoreline as Tottenham advanced to the semi-finals. Leanne Kiernan and Megan Campbell, who is expected to return for her country this year after an injury-plagued absence, came on in the last 25 minutes for the Reds.

Elsewhere, Pernille Harder scored a hat-trick as Chelsea cruised to a 4-2 win over West Ham.

The Denmark international opened the scoring for the visitors after 25 minutes only for Katerina Svitkova to equalise before half-time.

However, three goals in nine second-half minutes, Harder completing her treble after Erin Cuthbert had made it 2-1, took the match away from the Hammers, for whom Halle Houssein scored a late consolation.

Championship side Bristol City had hopes of an upset at Manchester City after taking the lead through Alex Greenwood’s own goal, but they were short-lived.

Khadija Shaw struck twice before the interval before Vicky Losada ensured there would be no further alarm just past the hour.
