Portadown have cancelled the signing of League of Ireland footballer Joe Gorman after a backlash from supporters over a sectarian tweet from earlier in his career.

The former Galway United player was announced as a new addition at the Irish League club last Saturday.

However, supporters vented their anger at Gorman joining the club, with a number of messages calling for the deal to be scrapped.

Gorman was suspended by his former club Inverness Caledonian Thistle in 2014 after posting a message on his social media, where he said he would "love to open up" on "orange men". He was 19 at the time.

Gorman also featured for Airdrie in Scotland as well as Longford Town, Bray Wanderers and Drogheda United in Ireland.

Ports have now revealed the deal to bring him to Shamrock Park has been cancelled, despite it being made public as a new signing last Saturday.

Manager Matthew Tipton had said: "We've signed three players this week. Joe Gorman should be announced today, with another deal agreed but not yet fully signed off and I'm working on a striker as well. Whatever happens elsewhere I’ll still be bringing bodies in."

Gorman was subsequently confirmed but a statement from Portadown FC this afternoon read: "After further discussions this deal has not been concluded. We wish Joe all the best for his future career."
