New Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte insisted he was happy with the group of players he inherited after they held on for victory in a "crazy" game against Vitesse Arnhem.

The Italian was taking charge of his first match since being appointed as Spurs' new head coach following Nuno Espirito Santo's sacking on Monday.

The north Londoners raced into a 3-0 lead within the first 28 minutes of Thursday's UEFA Europa Conference League game but saw the Dutch side fight back with two goals in a game featuring three red cards including for Tottenham centre-back Cristian Romero, before the Premier League side held on to a 3-2 win.

"It was a crazy game and usually I don't like these types of games. When it's a crazy game it means anything can happen but at the same time I think that we should win, and we won," Conte told BT Sport.

"For sure we were winning 3-0 and then we conceded two goals that we can avoid and then after a red card we were in trouble but I think to win is good for this team, it's good for these players and they need to improve their confidence.

"I think they need to work a lot and the problem is that we have to find the time to work, because in two days we have to play and then there is international break.

"I am happy because I found a group of players that they show me great ability. Tonight they wanted to win and for this reason they won, but for sure we have to improve and I think also that this is the positive.

"That in my opinion and my mind there is a lot of space for improvement for this team, in every single player."

When asked about key areas to target ahead of Tottenham's trip to Everton on Sunday, Conte said: "It's not easy because in two days we prepare for this game, now we only have one day because tomorrow I think it's impossible to work with the players that played tonight, also because they wasted a lot of energy.

"Tomorrow they have to rest and we will work with the players that didn't play.

"We needed to have a bit of patience because we needed to work and there are many aspects, tactically, physically and also the players have to understand what I want.

"But I am not afraid about the work because in my life I know only through work can you reach important targets."
