Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan has signed a new contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2024.

Phelan, previously part of Alex Ferguson's coaching team at the club, returned to Manchester United when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was appointed caretaker manager in December 2018. In May 2019, he moved from first-team coach to assistant manager.

"The 59-year-old has a wealth of experience and was, of course, a much-valued member of Sir Alex Ferguson's coaching team," said Manutd.com.

As a player, he made 146 appearances for United after signing from Norwich City in 1989, before joining West Brom in 1994. He was at the heart of Sir Alex’s first trophy-winning team, with honours including the 1990 FA Cup, 1991 European Cup Winners’ Cup and 1993 Premier League title.

"The coaching team will already be planning ahead for our next fixture after the international break, which comes at Leicester City, in the Premier League, on Saturday 16 October."

Solskjaer had previously signed a contract extension in July which is set to keep him at the club until 2024 with the option of another year.
