Jayson Molumby turns focus to Ireland's World Cup qualifiers after finding 'new home' at West Brom

Jayson Molumby has been a man on the move before the summer comes to an end.

For the third season in succession, the Republic of Ireland midfielder will be leaving Brighton on loan for an opportunity in the Championship.

Back in 2019-20 it was Millwall where he impressed and then the second half of last season saw the 22-year-old at Preston.

But for the remainder of this coming season, the Waterford man will be calling high-flying West Bromwich Albion home with the possibility of making the transfer permanent at the end of the year-long deal.

However, before he can focus on matters with the Baggies, the not so small matter of FIFA World Cup qualifiers will be dominating his thoughts with group favourites Portugal up next this Wednesday, before further games at home to Azerbaijan and Serbia.

Speaking on Sunday as the Portugal game in Faro closes in, Molumby said his desire to make a loan move away was down to him "looking for a new home" in terms of game-time.

"As soon as West Brom were in touch I was delighted and eager to jump in on that one," he said.

Molumby added that he had consulted Ireland boss Stephen Kenny about the move but did not have conversations with Brighton manager Graham Potter.

"Throughout the window, I spoke obviously to the gaffer (Kenny) on different things and I spoke to people who look after me and just family and friends, so I just wanted to make the right decision and that's probably why it took so long for me to end up going out on loan," he told RTÉ Sport.

"I didn't really consult with the gaffer at all at Brighton. I think he's probably got a lot busier things to do. He's got a lot of lads in the squad he needs to look after but it was more so speaking, like I said, to family and friends and obviously I know a few of the Irish boys and a few lads at West Brom.

"I just wanted to get a feel for it so I'm just really happy to be at West Brom and I'm really looking forward to the season and I feel like I've made the right decision."

One other person he did touch base with, of course, was his manager at West Brom, Valerien Ismael, who has given him an indication of how he plans to fit him into his plans.

"That was vital and crucial to speak to the manager to know what he expects and know what he wants. I'm really looking forward to getting in and training properly with the team, learning, and hopefully I can contribute to help the club," he said.

He won't get a chance to do so until after the international break but is hoping to help Ireland earn their first points of the campaign over the next week and a half, starting with a daunting trip to face Portugal.

But Molumby is relishing the chance to play in front of a crowd for the first time in an Ireland senior jersey, having made his debut against Finland on 6 September 2020 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic when stands at home and abroad were largely empty.

"Obviously, I haven't really played in front of a packed stadium with international crowds," he said.

"I think in Hungary and Finland, there were a few supporters but nothing to this extreme so I'm really looking forward to it and it will probably sink in a bit more after coming off the pitch."
