St Pat's defender Lee Desmond has been released form hospital and is expected to make a full recovery after sustaining a nasty head injury in Friday night's Airtricity League Premier Division match against Waterford.

The Saints won 2-1 to keep their title ambitions burning but the result was soured by Desmond's injury. He suffered a head collision and collapsed in the game's final moments.

Pat's manager Alan Mathews confirmed that while Desmond was unconscious "for a number of minutes" he did come around before he was taken from the ground to hospital.

Desmond was released in the early hours of Saturday morning.

"It's great that we got the three points although at the end of the game our only thoughts and concerns were with Lee Desmond and his wellbeing," said Mathews.

"He got a bad knock and had to be carried off the pitch. It didn't look good.

"Hopefully he'll be okay. He was unconscious for a number of minutes on the pitch. Thankfully by the time he got on the stretcher and was taken off he was conscious.

"He got a bad laceration to the side of his head and obviously was sparked out for a while."

Goals in each half from Matty Smith and Nahum Melvin-Lambert were enough to see Pat's overcome an in-form Waterford at Richmond Park as they drew level on points with league leaders Shamrock Rovers, albeit having played two games more.

"We're in a great spot," Mathews added. "We have a very committed group of players here. We played well last week up in Dundalk. if you're going to do anything you have to back good results up with more good results. We did that again against very difficult opponents.

"There's a lot of football still to be played, a lot of good sides who have come out of Europe and will want to get back there again. We've seen how well they've done the last couple of weeks and that's something we want to experience ourselves.

"We've gone joint top with Rovers. Grand. But nothing is handed out in August. We've got to keep churning it out week in, week out."
