UEFA have confirmed away supporters will not be permitted in upcoming international games, meaning Republic of Ireland fans can't attend the World Cup qualifier against Portugal in Faro next month.

It also rules out away supporters in Dublin for the games against Azerbaijan and Serbia at the Aviva Stadium.

The decision, due to Covid-19, applies to all visiting fans in UEFA Preliminary Competitions for the FIFA World Cup 2022 in the September international window, as well as friendly matches next month.

Fans travelled throughout Europe for the multi-city Euro 2020 tournament in the summer.

However, that was curtailed for the preliminary rounds of the European club competitions and has now been extended to the international editions.

Irish fans would have been likely to travel to Faro in good numbers for the 1 September game.

Following Government approval on the return of supporters to international football, the FAI is currently finalising ticket details for the 25,000 fans permitted to attend the home qualifiers against Azerbaijan (4 September) and Serbia (7 September) at the Aviva Stadium.

The FAI are currently working on a ticket distribution scheme.
