After two of its senior players were deemed close contacts of a confirmed Covid-19 case, Waterford FC have made the decision to stand down their senior team, with the club's Under-19 squad providing the players for Saturday's Premier Division game against Drogheda at the RSC.

A statement released by the club read: "Waterford FC wishes to advise that two of our senior players have been deemed to be close contacts of a confirmed Covid-19 case.

"As a result, we have carried out a wide testing programme of our first team. Thankfully, these tests have returned negative test results. However, in keeping with our ethos of public safety and that of our club and visitors, we have made the decision to stand down our senior team for the visit of Drogheda FC.

"Our talented Under-19 squad will take to the field in the RSC to fulfill the fixture under the guidance of manager Mike Geoghegan."

Earlier this week, the management duo of Kevin Sheedy and Mike Newell departed Waterford after nine games in charge.
