Finn Harps' dreams of completing building work on their new stadium have been given a huge boost after the Department of Sport announced the provisional allocation of €3.991m for its construction in Donegal.

It's almost 13 years since Finn Harps announced their €6.7m plan to move stadium but work stalled in 2014 because of the recession.

Last season Harps, who've been playing at Finn Park in Ballybofey since 1969, had to install temporary portacabins to ensure their home ground was Covid-19 compliant.

Today, they can look forward to finally advancing to the construction stage on a new stadium in Stranorlar after a provisional allocation of €3.991m was made to the FAI under the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF) for its development.

The payment of the grant will be contingent on compliance with all of the other terms and conditions of the LSSIF, including assurances that the balance of the construction costs can be secured.

"This is excellent news for the FAI, Finn Harps Football Club and the football community in Donegal," said Minister  Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Catherine Martin.

"The Government is committed to investing in our sport infrastructure and we have ambitious plans to enhance investment in the LSSIF and the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme in the years ahead."
