Dundalk defender Sonni Nattestad has been hit with a two-game suspension for the red card in the President's Cup clash with Shamrock Rovers before the start of the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division season.
Nattestad was sent off in second half of the win for a lunging tackle. However he was able to play the league game with Sligo Rovers.
The President’s Cup, played on 12 March, is classified as a friendly fixture so a red card does not entail an automatic suspension as it would in the league.
Red cards in friendly matches go to the FAI Disciplinary Committee and they have opted for a two-game ban at their latest meeting.
Nattestad was on international duty with the Faroe Islands last week and his suspension will only kick in from now.
It means he will miss Friday’s live televised clash with Shamrock Rovers. The defender, who scored against Austria at the weekend, will also miss the home game with Bohemians.
Meanwhile Waterford assistant boss Mike Newell has been issued with a three-game ban after being sent from the touchline on the opening night of the season against Waterford.
