Derry City goalkeeper Nathan Gartside has been named in the Northern Ireland squad for their opening World Cup qualifiers next week.

Paddy McNair has also been included despite an injury concern.

McNair was forced off with a knee problem in Middlesbrough's win over Preston on Tuesday night but takes his place in Ian Baraclough's 26-strong squad.

There are also first call-ups for Accrington striker Dion Charles but Ethan Galbraith, Tom Flanagan and Ryan McLaughlin are all absent.

Both Charles and Gartside have previously represented Northern Ireland at youth level.

Charles, 25, is having a superb season with Accrington, and has scored 17 goals in 38 appearances so far this term.

Gartside takes his place alongside regular number one Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Conor Hazard in the squad, with both Michael McGovern and Trevor Carson out injured.

"I had Roy Carroll making a late bid for a comeback," Baraclough joked when asked about his goalkeeping options.

"Nathan is someone I know who will be coming in for the experience and he will certainly be up for it.

"He'll be relishing getting the call and he'll relish being part of the group."

Blackburn's Corry Evans is back in the squad after being hampered by injuries, joined by his brother Jonny, with the Leicester defender having overcome a calf problem.

Liam Boyce is included in the squad, though may not join up with his team-mates immediately as he awaits the birth of his second child.

However, Sunderland loanee Jordan Jones misses out with injury.

Northern Ireland begin their qualifying campaign away to Italy in Parma on 25 March before facing Bulgaria at Windsor Park on 31 March, with a friendly at home to the United States in between.

Baraclough is still waiting for a first win in regular time since taking over from Michael O'Neill, with his only victory to date coming in the penalty shoot-out against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A trip to Italy, where Northern Ireland have never won, might be an unlikely place to find it but Baraclough said the mood was positive.

"We'll meet it head on," he said. "Rather than meet them mid-campaign where they've maybe got up a head of steam, we may just catch them cold.

"We've got to be on top of our game, there's no illusions about that. But there's no fear going in there, we'll relish the chance."
