The homes of Paris St Germain players Angel Di Maria and Marquinhos were burgled on Sunday during the club's 2-1 defeat at home to Nantes.

French newspaper L'Equipe said the burglars managed to steal a safe from Di Maria's home containing jewels and watches worth at least €500,000, and that it was the reason, after a brief discussion with PSG sports director Leonardo, why the Argentinian was taken off the pitch by coach Mauricio Pochettino after 62 minutes.

Di Maria, who just extended his contract with PSG by one season until 2022, had already been a victim of an attempted burglary in 2015, during his spell with Manchester United.

The club confirmed in a statement that Brazilian defender and club captain Marquinhos said his family home had been robbed during the Nantes game while his family was on the premises.

"But nobody was hurt and everybody is well... French authorities have launched an inquiry", the statement said. The player’s father and two sisters were home during the break-in.

It is the latest in a spate of robberies involving the club’s players.

Mauro Icardi was the victim of a break-in at his home last month. Thiago Silva, Dani Alves and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting were also robbed in recent years while playing for the club.

The public prosecutor in Nanterre said the Banditry Repression Brigade (BRB), a French anti-organised crime squad, had been tasked with the investigation into the incident at Di Maria's home. It looked into burglaries of the homes of Icardi and goalkeeper Sergio Rico earlier this year.
