Referee Darren Drysdale has been removed from the League Two fixture between Southend and Bolton on Saturday, the EFL has confirmed.
Drysdale was charged with improper conduct by the Football Association on Wednesday over his confrontation with Ipswich midfielder Alan Judge.
The 50-year-old Lincolnshire official appeared to square up to Judge and lean his head into the Republic of Ireland international after the midfielder's appeal for a penalty had been turned down during Ipswich's goalless draw with Northampton on Tuesday evening.
Drysdale had been due to referee the Southend v Bolton game this weekend, but that will now be officiated by Declan Bourne.
The referee has already accepted that his behaviour fell below the levels that are expected.
"I fully understand that it is important for us as referees to maintain our composure throughout the game and always engage with players in a professional manner," Drysdale said in a statement released by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited.
"I'm sorry that I did not do that last night and I can only apologise to Alan and Ipswich Town."
