The French football league must go back to the drawing board after an emergency auction of the media rights failed to reach the reserve price.
The current rights holders, Mediapro, failed to make scheduled payments and as a result settled with the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) to step away from their deal, which was reportedly worth €1bn.
The LFP are in charge of negotiating rights for the top two tiers in French league football.
Previous rights holders, BeIN Sports and Canal + did not participate in the emergency auction, while DAZN, Amazon and Discovery's bids did not reach the reserve.
"Given that the reserve price has not been met, the consultations [bids] have been declared unsuccessful," said the LFP.
"The LFP gives itself 48 hours to define the next steps to take in the commercialisation of its rights."
The LFP expect to negotiate further with Canal +, however, the media company feel that the price of the rights are now "artificially high" due to the Mediapro deal, which were sold for 60% higher than the previous deal.
