Former Republic of Ireland international Kevin Sheedy has been appointed as new Waterford FC manager, the club announced in a statement this evening.

Ex-Luton Town manager Mike Newell will arrive as his assistant.

Sheedy has previously coached at Tranmere Rovers and Hartlepool United before spending a decade as an academy coach at Everton - the club at which he spent the bulk of his playing career.

He spent the past three years, coaching the Al-Shabab youth team in Saudi Arabia.

Sheedy, born in Wales to an Irish father, earned 46 caps for the Republic of Ireland between 1984 and 1993, scoring nine goals, the most famous of which was the equaliser against England in Palermo in June 1990, Ireland's first ever goal at a World Cup finals.

His former international team-mate John Sheridan managed Waterford for eight games during the 2020 season, before departing for Wigan Athletic soon after.
