Dundalk skipper Chris Shields lamented his side's inability to convert goal chances as they lost their fourth Europa League game.

The Co Louth outfit saw their outside hopes at emerging from Group B extinguished as they lost 3-1 to Rapid Wien at the Aviva.

Shields converted a penalty when the Lilywhites were 3-0 down but they had earlier missed from the spot before the visitors’ third goal when Nathan Oduwa pulled his effort wide.

"We’ve been in games where we have been 2-0 up and you go and concede a goal and then your backs are up against the wall for the remainder of the game," said Shields.

"You have to be putting penalties away. It’s unlucky for Nathan, he does it in training all the time. He’s done what he wanted to do and he’s dragged it too far.

"I’m sure he’ll be disappointed as well.

"On paper, after the last game [a 4-3 defeat in Vienna] we fancied ourselves to go into the game with an even chance.

"But coughing up chances like that as this level, we are going to be punished, it’s happened in the other group games as well.

"Not being clinical up the other end, you give yourself such a disadvantage. We’d probably have to put it down to that."
